Game Commercial

first semester wrap up

Okay so its been a while since I uploaded anything for my blog. since that time I've made a board game and have made some significant progress on my level.
I had plenty of fun painting the artwork. not so much with the box making.

On top of the board game, here are some whip screenshots of my level that I am working on in 3D.

Still polishing the level but it should be done by Friday.

More updates to come and hopefully some more 3D projects next semester.

Resistance is Feudal Print and Play Game!

It is now my pleasure to present to you my final print and play game. Click this link to download and play my print and play game!

friends playing my game

This game was a lot of fun to make and I learned a lot about the importance of play testing and how it contributes to a polished game. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in game design give print and play a shot at.

Post In Class Game Critique and Game changes

This past Monday I had an opportunity to test out my game idea with a few of my classmates. The biggest critique notes that I got from them was that there wasn't enough motivation to fight the opposite player and that combat took to long. As a result of Mondays class I have taken some time to reflect and incubate some new ideas that pretty much overhaul the games core objective.

My thoughts for what I can do differently with my game are that instead of fighting against one another, what if they where fighting for control of a specific resource? In the spirit of my theme I thought that food would be best to use. My idea is that there is a central area on the game board that players must control to get food. At the end of each turn the player who controls the food area is awarded an amount of food. At the start of each turn, players draw cards from the deck that are either positive or negative in nature. There will only be a set number of turns before the game ends and the player with the most food wins. In terms of combat,  when engaging in attack, the players will play a mini game of rock paper scissors  that lasts one round, the player that wins the mini game will have killed the opposing players unit.

I plan to test these new ideas out Thursday with the same group who gave me the feedback to see if the game is more enticing.

Game Workshop Mashup

In class we where instructed to partner up with a classmate and mash two boardgames that we brought to class together and make a new game. I brought to class "the game of life starwars edition" and my partner brought a guessing game called "Myth or truth" together we made it into a completely new game.

Rules of the game:

  • each player spins the wheel to determine how many spaces they move
  • if the player lands on a lesson tile they then draw a tile from one of the three decks of cards and must answer the question
  • if the player answers the question properly, they are then awarded a skill point.
  • the player with the most skill points at the end of the game wins

Point values:

  • skill tile 1 pt
  • 1 question card 2pt
  • 2 question 5pt
  • dark side point -2pt

ADDITIONAL RULES:
  • deciding to go throught the dark side path will award you a dark side chip which will count against you in the final score. however you steal chips from other players when you go down the dark side path
  • if you fail to answer a question correctly, you will also be given a dark side point

Theme for my Print and Play game

 Concept statement: Resistance is feudal

For my print and play game, I have been asked to establish a general theme by my teacher. I may not have said what I was gonna go with in my last post but the general idea was that the game was gonna be about two feudal lords fighting to take over each others keep. This means that the general theme of the PnP game will be medieval. Items like cards, Pawns, and even the manual will all have to fit this theme.  Boarders of the play area would be floral and resemble that of flowers found on medieval paintings. Much of the design would resemble that of period artwork.

(example of period artwork)
Many of the paper pieces like knights, peasants, mercenaries, and other classes would have the same sort of drawing style. With a wealth of artworks from the early, high, and late medieval period, I think it will be easy to find some artwork that will match my ideas.
As for the board game, I feel as though a more realistic birds eye view should be taken, however I think once the prototype has been completed, that may change to a semi realistic style.

When it comes down to it my idea has to have a strong theme to unify all elements of the PnP game otherwise I may not have a strong game.

Game Ideas For Final Project

For class we where tasked with creating some quick ideas for our upcoming board game assignment. I spent some time brainstorming and came up with some ideas. Some of the themes I brainstormed where WW1 boardgames, medieval boardgames, card games , and various other ideas.

(some pictures of my brainstorming)

Of the many ideas that I came up with the idea that I will most likely go with is a game about two feudal lords battling for control of the land. it will probably be a mix of chess, DND, and Stratigo. it will involve things like trap cards which could either be beneficial to one army or harmful. the game would also incorporate dice rolling to determine who won a fight. the game would also include basic strategy planning.

Upcoming game that I'm excited for

I'm super stoked for the sequel to Dishonored. Since the first one was announced I have been an avid fan of this franchise. I love that the trailer makes us think that we are still Corvo, but then it reveals that we are actually Emily. I'm super excited to be able to play as Emily this game as well as getting to see Corvo again.

Second Print and Play review

For class we were assigned to review another game and have a bit more of an in depth look at the mechanics.

The game I decided to play was called Quick joust in simplest terms is a game of two players (although it can be played with more in a tourney style match). The goal of the game is to either get the most points out of 3 rounds (you can make more rounds if you desire) or unhorse your opponent. The games core mechanics involve playing cards with drawings of arrows and two jousting tracks that are five card spaces long.

The cards that have the jousting track illustration on them are where the space of the game will take place. However the player also has cards that they quickly draw from a stack of five right next to the track. The game traditionally comes with a cutout lance icon but I substituted the paper piece with coins. The other objects you play with are cards and in more advance games shield icons. The game is pretty much chance based as the only way to win is by picking random cards.

Overall this game was rather enjoyable. especially for a 15 min game.

Print and Play game reviews

For our game design class we had homework which was to find 3 print and play games and play them with some of our friends.
First game my friends and I played was called 36D6 a dice based game of chance, Ill include a link (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/17637/36d6)
In this game two players have dice and attack each other by rolling respective die, the player who rolls the higher number on the die wins and advances across a board while the losing player loses a die. When one person loses all their die, the game ends.

The next game we played was a three person game called Allegiance , a card based game that revolves around a temple and a thieves guild. the game takes 3-4 players and each one can decide what institution they want to support. I chose to support the temple. That meant I had to play my cards in favor of the temple while trying to get rid of my opponents cards. This game was by far my favorite game to play because it made for some good moments with friends as well as providing an engaging experience.

The final game my friends and I played was called Zombie Invasion. The game revolved around having 3 players in a turn based dice rolling game. One player would play as the survivor, while the other two would play as the zombies. The goal of the survivor is to board up the house while trying to not get eaten by the zombies. This game was probably my second favorite because even thought the game was way unbalanced for the survivor due to RNG being chance based. I still had fun with some of the mechanics like being able to corner the survivor in one instance or attack them through the window.

Artwork from freshman year

To get this blog started here are two pieces of art from my freshman year at Ringling.

The above image was for my final project for 3D in which we had to create a grunt for a video game. I chose to create an alien which I made out of polymer clay and armature wire, and using an airbrush,  applied paint to give the alien an extraterrestrial feel.
The second piece is a Thorne room of the Titanic which I made out of prefab parts and resin for the water.

Introductions

Hello There!
I am Preston McClary. I'm a student at Ringling College of Art and Design currently pursuing my BFA in Game Art. This blog is to show my creative process and some of the works I have made and will be making throughout my career at the school. I hope you all will enjoy my work and maybe get a little bit of inspiration yourselves.
